Fragments from the Attack on Estonia’s Military School at the Time of the Communist Coup Attempt on 1 December 1924

Communists attempted to overthrow the Estonian government in Tallinn on 1 December 1924, in the course of which objects of vital importance in Estonia’s capital were attacked. Estonia’s military school, which was a part of the Estonian Army’s Unified Training Institutions, located in the Tondi barracks, was one of those objects. A letter from Lieutenant Jaan Kendra to his girlfriend Vanda Kusmik is published in this article. The letter is preserved in the private collection of Hannes Prits. Kendra had been sent to the Estonian Army’s Unified Training Institutions to participate in a course for standing army officers. He was at the military school on the morning of 1 December. He wrote this letter later and described in it the events that took place that morning.
